LiDAR: Autonomous Car

LiDAR implementation in self-driving cars

LiDAR (Light Imaging, Direction And Ranging) is a method that measures the distance to a target by illuminating the target with pulsed laser light and measuring the reflected pulses with a sensor. Autonomous cars take advantage of this new technology.

The differences in laser return times and wavelengths can then be used to make digital 3-D representations of the target. It has terrestrial, airborne, and mobile applications. One of the current uses that have given is an autonomous car. It enables us the possibility to measure the distance to obstacles.

The output distance is a 2d array that can be interpreted as an image where the resolution is the number of light beams.
